Del Norte, Colorado, is a town steeped in history and tradition. One of the most cherished events that encapsulates our community’s spirit is the annual Covered Wagon Days. This celebration not only honors our past but also brings together residents and visitors in a shared appreciation of our cultural heritage.
A Glimpse into the Past
Del Norte’s origins trace back to the early 1870s when prospectors discovered gold and silver near Bennett Peak. This discovery led to the establishment of a bustling mining community. Over time, Del Norte evolved, but the echoes of its rich history remain evident in its architecture and traditions. Covered Wagon Days serves as a vibrant reminder of these formative years, allowing us to reflect on the journey that shaped our town.
Community at the Heart
What makes Covered Wagon Days truly special is the sense of unity it fosters. The event features a variety of activities, including parades, car shows, and the Bee’s Knees 5K run/walk. These festivities provide opportunities for individuals of all ages to participate, strengthening the bonds within our community. Moreover, the event’s proceeds benefit local veterans and businesses, emphasizing our collective commitment to supporting one another.
Looking Ahead
As we anticipate the upcoming Covered Wagon Days, scheduled for July 31 to August 2, 2026, there is a call for community involvement. The organizing committee is seeking board members and volunteers to help shape the event’s future. Positions such as Secretary, Treasurer, and Vice President are open, offering residents a chance to play a pivotal role in this cherished tradition. Even those not ready for a board role can contribute by sharing ideas, supporting events, and being part of the community-building efforts.
In conclusion, Covered Wagon Days is more than just an event; it is a testament to Del Norte’s enduring spirit and rich heritage. By participating and supporting this celebration, we honor our past, strengthen our present community ties, and pave the way for a vibrant future.
